EFFECT OF UKRAIN ON SELECTED BIOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS IN THE SERUM OF METHANOL-INTOXICATED RATS

Summary: The present study evaluated the effect of a 10-day period of treatment with Ukrain, a thiophosphor-ic acid derivative of alkaloids from Chelidonium majus L, on the concentration of beta-2-microglobulin (beta-2-M), urea and creatinine in the blood serum of rats acutely intoxicated with methanol. The acute intoxication caused a significant increase in the concentration of beta-2-M and urea but did not affect the creatinine level in the serum as compared with the control group. The urea/creatinine ratio was very high. The 10-day period of treatment with Ukrain at doses of 14 or 28 mg/kg administered intraperitoneally to methanol-pretreated rats resulted in a significant lowering of all the parameters examined except creatinine, whose level remained unchanged. The urea/creatinine ratio was significantly lower.
