Cytotoxicity of Ukrain to human malignant cell lines has previously been well documented.

The present studies were undertaken to evaluate the simultaneous influence of Ukrain (U) and protoporphyrine amino acid conjugates (PP+AAc) on human malignant cell lines. U and PP+AAc were added to the culture medium in an amount of 50 mcg per one cell culture. After 48 hrs of incubation and washing out of reagents the cell cultures were irradiated with light of 400 nm wavelength for 8 min (E=150J/cm2).

After irradiation 200 cells were plated per one colony and incubated for one week, them stained and colony counted. It was found that incubation of human malignant cell lines with U and PP+AAc simultaneously increases the cytotoxicity of the compounds approximately twice as compared with U or PP+AAc applied individually. The here presented data indicate that U and PP+AAc act on human malignant cell lines synergistically as cytotoxic compounds.
